Don Jon Review

Don Jon
3 stars out of 4
By Brett Takeshita

Damn it, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Your uber talents as an actor could've been enough. But then you gotta one-up all the other actors and prove that you can direct and write as well. What is this?

Hell, you can't be mad at good ol' JGL because he's just too likable. Gotta give props to one of the most charming, multi-talented actors in Hollywood. And after Don Jon, you'll love and respect him even more. This excellent, exciting debut is one of the finest romantic comedies of the year.

Insidious: Chapter 2 Review

Insidous: Chapter 2
3 stars out of 4
By Brett Takeshita

The first Insidious was a lesson on how to do horror right. It stripped away all the blood and gore that is all too common in modern horror and presented us with an eerie old-fashioned tale that constantly delivered the thrills and chills. I consider it to be one of the finest horror films of this young century. So how does the second installment fair? While it isn't quite as masterful as its predecessor, Insidious: Chapter 2 is a strong and occasionally mind-boggling installment in what is already a brilliant series.

Ass Backwards Review

Ass Backwards
2.5 stars out of 4
By Brett Takeshita

Heard of Ass Backwards? Yeah, I didn't think so. Neither did I. I was fortunate enough to catch a screening of this little-seen, under-the-radar indie comedy and had a great time. While this isn't a particularly fresh or inventive comedy, Ass Backwards works thanks to its wonderful, charming leads.

Prisoners Review

Prisoners
3 stars out of 4
By Brett Takeshita

Prisoners is one of the finest adult crime dramas to come around in a while. It is magnificently acted, beautifully shot, and exceptionally executed. This is a thought-provoking film that will stay with you for quite some time with its complex questions and meaty material.

Elysium Review

Elysium
2.5 stars out of 4
By Brett Takeshita

Elysium isn't the complex, deep sci-fi epic that cinephiles predicted. The hype was certainly bigger than the final product. However, that doesn't make Elysium a bad film. In fact, if you go into this movie knowing that it's a simple yet slick popcorn flick, you'll have a good time.

Scary Movie 5 Review

Scary Movie 5
1 star out of 4
By Brett Takeshita

Why oh why did I see Scary Movie 5? I knew how terrible the reviews were. I knew how angry the fans were. I even saw the dumb trailer and wasn't impressed. However, I still had a glimmer of hope that this might be a good movie. After all, I love each of the past four installments. People hate on them, but I love them because they are so unashamedly stupid but hilarious. However, Scary Movie 5 is a huge step down from the previous installments. It is a huge letdown and a big disappointment.

With The World's End, we have (yet again!) another apocalypse/end of the world movie. Before you run off, be happy in knowing that The World's End is a fresh, funny, and wild take on the apocalypse that you really need to check out. It's packed to the brim with refreshing humor, entertaining action, and heartwarming messages -- yes, even with its premise of the world's demise.
