Film Reviews (Capsule): September 2011

Capsule reviews from my Tumblr.

1. Warrior- 3 stars

An overly long but well-made drama with some great performances and a lot of heart.

2. Red State- 2 stars

An amazing and scary first half leads to a conventional action-oriented second half with a disappointing ending.

3. Puncture- 3 and 1/2 stars

One of the best movies of the year. Engaging and extremely well crafted, with Chris Evans giving one of the best performances of the year.
4. Abduction- 2 stars

After first watching it, I enjoyed it. Looking back at it, it’s a film that is ridiculously stupid. Poor writing and stiff performances are slightly redeemed by the entertaining action sequences.
5. 50/50- 3 and 1/2 stars

Don’t let the trailers fool you. This is much more of a drama than a comedy. Expect some really raw scenes. The amazing cast elevates the movie to a higher level.
6. Drive- 4 stars

Perhaps the only film that I will award with 4 stars. Nothing quite like it. By far the best movie of the year. It rivals Black Swan as my favorite movie ever. Exciting, intense, gripping, and entirely suspenseful. Ryan Gosling again proves that he might be one of his generation’s greatest actors.
7. What’s Your Number?- 3 stars

Predictable romantic comedy that is saved by Anna Faris and Chris Evans. Some really funny and raunchy material. But it’s really sweet. One of the year’s stronger comedies.
8. Ides of March- 3 and 1/2 stars

Again, one of the best movies of the year. A political drama with some thriller-like elements. Intense, scandalous, and engrossing with a big twist. The cast is excellent.
9. Machine Gun Preacher- 2 and 1/2 stars

A strange mixture of being inspirational and extremely violent. It isn’t quite perfect, but it does tell a very important story that is emotionally affecting.
